Joseph Cross, the art director on Bungie's upcoming shooter Marathon, has announced his resignation from the company.
Originally reported by Kotaku, Cross has now made this move official with a brief statement on social media:
This comes just after Marathon's recent reintroduction following heavy criticism from early playtests.
Having implemented feedback from the community, fans are looking much more favourably on the sci-fi extraction shooter.
Marathon has a very distinct art style, with lots of stark colouring punctuating its gritty sci-fi universe. Cross, who spearheaded the direction for its striking look, leaves Bungie a few months before its launch in March 2026.
We imagine that much of his work is done at this stage of development, but it's also important to remember the art-related scandal that may have influenced his decision to step away.
Earlier this year, it was discovered that the game prominently featured the work of an independent artist without permission.
This has since been resolved, with the plagiarised work removed and replaced with original art, but it took its toll on the reputation of the game and Bungie itself.
Cross looked particularly deflated during a livestream in which the studio addressed the issue.
Anyway, it seems things are looking brighter for Marathon at this stage, and its art director will be "enjoying playing the game as a fan" in the new year.

Now before people dog pile on him, just remember the whole art raiders scandal happened before he even got the job at Bungie, just thought you would like to know that
This isn't a great look for the game = I'm sure they got a great offer somewhere and took all the events that happened very personally, but maybe a leader should stay until a project is shipped to do right by everyone.
@Oram77 A balanced and reasoanble comment on the internet... what's wrong with you! Outrage dammit!
"I'll be enjoying playing the game as a fan"
Something tells me he won't LUL
@SeanOhOgain I don’t really agree. His role as art director is basically complete now.
Of course they will need to refill the position for live service work, but I think it’s fine for him to step aside at this stage if that’s what he wants.
(I’m sure the scandal took a lot out of him to be honest.)
He loves the game and still shares Marathon related things on social media all the time. The reaction of people to the stolen art situation had a large negative effect on him and his mental health presumably.
Poor guy took the brunt of hate on something he had no control over. Hopefully his next endeavor is less controversial.
A open beta would do really good for this game
This game is doa in my opinion but we'll see.
@LifeGirl Not so sure about that anymore, the comments on the latest ViDoc for the game are actually quite positive.
@HaveTheSauce I agree, this game isn’t for me but it’d be great to show off the improvements that won over the recent fans. At the very least, it’ll stop people wishing the worst on the game.
@HaveTheSauce There will be a preview weekend before the game launches, that is confirmed
I played the closed beta and it was really good. It’s pretty solid, definitely doesn’t deserve the hate. I don’t understand some gamers sometimes. Complain about no games and then want games to die as soon as they release.
@T-Bone09 I think since the boom of social media, it "pays" to be more negative and hatrid about everything, Obviously there can still be valid criticism they tend to get lost in the cesspool...
@T-Bone09 It's not the game "Marathon" specifically i think, it's all the live service situation lately. As soon as you say a live service game is coming out people only see a greedy image of a poor developed game and money grab
Should have departed during the beginning stretch. I joke! but yeah I really don't like the textures or look of this game. Destiny 2 I love though!
Tried last beta wasn't impressed tbh
Not a fan of the art style for Marathon but I still might try it after it's launched. The only game's I've played and like in this genre are Hunt Showdown 1896, Division 2 Dark Zone and obviously Arc Raiders. Playing Arc Raiders this morning went to extract and this player says 'Don't Shoot' then tries to kill me. He gets 3 shots into me and then obviously I start shooting and I kill him, he didn't let me finish him off. He had good loot on him too, obviously he thought he could kill me, I don't get it. The 3-round burst assault rifle Arpeggio fully upgraded melts players who try and kill you. It has 60% fire rate fully upgraded 70% with attachments, I love this rifle it's literally melts players.
@HaveTheSauce
I understand the skepticism, I was about the 14 games that Sony was going to release, now it’s less than half that.
But I just like variety. I love the single payer experience that Sony offers.
I enjoy multiplayer games as well. What
successful Sony produced multiplayer game has there been this gen? HellDivers 2? That’s about it. And it’s GAaS. It’s done right. Not pay to play.
But that’s it.. and all I hear about is how bad they want Marathon to fail. For what reason? They are offering something to a group of players that is new from them.
I don’t know I just try to play games with an open mind. Marathon definitely doesn’t deserve the hate.. it may not be for everyone, of course.
Just watched a recent video about marathon. It seemed to me that the visuals have been reworked quite a bit and the world they have build looks quite interesting to me. If it was getting a VR mode, I certainly would try it (,even though I likely would not survive for more than 1min).
I am actually optimistic for Marathon. I think the latest video made the game actually look very good and in my opinion, the success of Arc Raiders will actually help this title.
I personally love the look of the game, it's so different to anything else and the art team did Steller work.
I'm quite excited to try the game in March.
@Oram77 I'm reporting this comment for being too sensible.
@Afroducc I think you're right. The huge player numbers Arc Raiders is seeing mean that there are now millions more people who are now familiar with extraction shooters and potentially willing to give Marathon a shot.
@DanteDevilHunter fully upgraded stitcher is my rat killer of choice..
Well that's unsurprising
this is a bad look 😂
No matter how you spin it, not a good sign. Art director is a cozy role to enjoy for many years if the future of the studio is bright. An art person simply has no position higher than that in game development.
It’s always like this in nature.
You abandon the ship when you feel it will sink.
Sorry but Marathon.. with all respect, that looks like a total crap.
